I grew up on a heritage farm near the shores of Lake Erie in Ontario, and have also spent time in Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba before settling in British Columbia, resulting in a love for all things Canadian, especially literature.
My artwork is inspired by nature, found objects, and colour. I started working with watercolour as a teen and moved into mixed media to incorporate real life into my paintings: found objects such as plants, photos, heirlooms, and text. Using mark-making, handwriting, and collage, I create an interesting surface that connects the viewer to the experience of the piece, while alluding to other people, places, and times.
Many of my paintings--born out of my experience of the Canadian landscape and connection to the past--function as a personal geography. The process of creating art is difficult at times, but connects me to something greater than myself. On the canvas, my own brokenness is resolved, making way for joy.
Professionally, I have been working with Parks Canada for over a decade since I graduated from Briercrest College, and have since studied fine art techniques at Emily Carr University and writing at Simon Fraser University's Writing and Publishing Program.
My husband Curtis, our two children and I live near Vancouver, BC, Canada.
