Making sense of my “wrapped cube” assignment – now that you’ve seen me analyzing my cube through camera phone technology, I still haven’t been able to find a whole lot of meaning in this assignment.<\/p>\n
The task: After I’ve lived with my cube for a week, and analyzed it thoroughly, I have to wrap it (without harming it).\u00a0 Will there be a sense of mystery\/estrangement about what the wrapping conceals?\u00a0 Will it evoke an emotion? Be easily recognized?\u00a0 . . .<\/p>\n
So I thought I’d do a little research: My Top 10 List of “Wrapped Cubes.”<\/p>\n
10. Wrapped cubes are commonplace in horticulture – garden seed starter<\/a><\/p>\n 9. The perfect Thanksgiving gift – special gift-wrapped rubik’s cube<\/a><\/p>\n 8. For those of my classmates who very capably created a sphere out of cardboard and glue, here’s a task for you:\u00a0 a wrapped cube!<\/a><\/p>\n 7. A classic kids’ Kids science fair experiment – wrapping ice cubes using various kitchen wraps 5. This one’s for my dad\u00a0 – the Cube-line Wrapper 3. Dr. Cube<\/a> – it’s not actually a wrapped cube, but it was too funny to omit.<\/p>\n 2. Cement tea cake<\/a>…maybe she shouldn’t have unwrapped it.<\/p>\n 1. One kilo of wrapped sugar cubes<\/a>.<\/p>\n I can’t believe how prolific wrapped cubes are in the world.\u00a0 But none of these have inspired me on how to wrap my cube.\u00a0 The best suggestion so far, which relates to my current fancy for communication theory, is to wrap it in tape out of a video.\u00a0 Maybe I will use old book pages or covers.<\/p>\n How would you wrap your cube? \nAfter a lot of reading and thinking about Christo and Jeanne-Claude<\/a>, I’ve finally started to figure out the purpose of the wrapped cube assignment.\u00a0 The works they have created are really awe-inspiring (see the page about “Over the River<\/a>“), and the picture here – The Gates<\/a> – New York City 2005.<\/p>\n
