The first night we stayed on the farm, blanketed in humidity, ears ringing with the overwhelming buzz of insects, blocked from my grandparents&#8217; old house by thick and wild overgrowth, I thought of Annie and her knack for describing the awe-inspiring beauty and horror of her rural landscape. Case in point, the sheer number of cicadas my 2-yr-old son and I found on a single tree one day (about 5 and then more later), emerging from their skins:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_470\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 200px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/306062_10150268283641353_602086352_7990134_6210597_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-470 size-medium\" title=\"cicada\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/306062_10150268283641353_602086352_7990134_6210597_n-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/306062_10150268283641353_602086352_7990134_6210597_n-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/306062_10150268283641353_602086352_7990134_6210597_n.jpg 479w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Cicada emerging from its skin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Elizabeth Hay&#8217;s <a title=\"Alone in the Classroom\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/product\/0771037945\/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=485327511&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_i=0771038119&amp;pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&amp;pf_rd_r=1MJD846F5TSEFFHNM8YG\" target=\"_blank\">Alone in the Classroom<\/a> &#8211; not as engaging as her <a title=\"Late Nights on Air\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Late-Nights-Air-Elizabeth-Hay\/dp\/0771038119\" target=\"_blank\">Late Nights on Air<\/a>, I still appreciated the Canadian literary qualities of the book. I also enjoyed reading a book that showed me how a writer could link together stories from an ancestor&#8217;s life in the early 20th century.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/NurtureShock-New-Thinking-About-Children\/dp\/0446504122\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314851312&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\">Nurture Shock: New Thinking about Children<\/a> &#8211; a fascinating book featuring eight topics like praise and self esteem, why kids lie, sleep deprivation, etc. I love this kind of book &#8211; lots of interesting research that is already changing my perspective and practices with our kids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Bible &#8211; it&#8217;s always on my nightstand but it&#8217;s been open more than usual this month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Little-Princes-Promise-Bring-Children\/dp\/0061930059\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314852827&amp;sr=1-1\">Little Princes<\/a> &#8211; orphans living in terrible conditions in Nepal after being sold by their parents, who were deceived by traffickers&#8230;it was a truly moving story. A young man goes down to volunteer and ends up starting a charity to help reconnect the families.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Sara Gruen&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Water-Elephants-Sara-Gruen\/dp\/0006391559\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314851643&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">Water for Elephants<\/a> &#8211; just started it &#8211; so far pretty light reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Great Grandmother&#8217;s <a title=\"Summer on the\u00c2\u00a0farm\" href=\"http:\/\/delightfilledart.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/24\/summer-on-the-farm\/\">letters &amp; journals<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Syrie James&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Lost-Memoirs-Jane-Austen\/dp\/0061341428\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314851713&amp;sr=1-1\">The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen<\/a> &#8211; light summer reading for my vacation &#8211; I got right into this story but at the end of the day, knowing it is fictional (but based on some facts) makes it intrinsically disappointing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Want to Read<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Help-Kathryn-Stockett\/dp\/0425232204\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314853347&amp;sr=1-1\">The Help<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Thousand-Splendid-Suns-Khaled-Hosseini\/dp\/0143054406\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314853297&amp;sr=1-1\">A Thousand Splendid Suns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Book-Thief-Markus-Zusak\/dp\/0375842209\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314853381&amp;sr=1-1\">The Book Thief<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>T.V. Shows<\/strong><br \/>\nWe don&#8217;t have cable, so the most TV I watched was on the flight back to BC from our family vacation in Ontario, when I watched 3 consecutive episodes of What not to Wear. It is worth noting that my plane TV screen only worked on one of four flights. And earlier this summer I watched (and surprisingly really enjoyed) the first season of Gilmore Girls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Movies I&#8217;ve Seen:<\/strong> We actually took our two preschoolers to a real movie in the theatre: Winnie the Pooh. I borrow quite a few DVDs from the library such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Monsoon-Wedding-Widescreen-Naseeruddin-Shah\/dp\/B00006AW0I\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314852783&amp;sr=1-1\">Monsoon Wedding<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Red-Balloon-DVD\/dp\/B0012Z361M\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314852227&amp;sr=1-1\">Red Balloon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Exit-Through-Gift-Shop-Special\/dp\/B003ZXNCIQ\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314852310&amp;sr=1-1\">Exit Through Gift Shop<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Roman-Holiday-Special-Collectors-Gregory\/dp\/B00006RGCS\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314852352&amp;sr=1-1\">Roman Holiday<\/a>, etc. I watched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Kandahar-Widescreen-DVD\/dp\/B000067DFL\/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314853210&amp;sr=1-1\">Kandahar<\/a> last week and it&#8217;s really stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In My Ears:<\/strong> I listen to music a lot to help me concentrate at work, and have finished about five months of going through my ipod songs in alphabetical order! Now I often go for shuffle songs, though I don&#8217;t like being surprised by all the Raffi and children&#8217;s music that ends up interspersed! Enjoying Broken Social Scene, Downhere (old college friends of mine, who have just released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Altar-Love-Downhere\/dp\/B005CAAX0K\/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1314853585&amp;sr=1-1\">new album<\/a>), Bjork, Feist, Stereolab &#8211; the usual.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Newest Blog Reads and\/or Internet Interest<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dahlhausart.blogspot.com\/\">Dahlhaus<\/a> &#8211; dear (yet far-flung) friend of ours who&#8217;s career as an artist has been advancing in leaps and bounds!<\/li>\n<li>My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiodeluxephotography.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/let-the-blogging-begin-2\/\">photographer husband<\/a>, who is starting to embrace the marketing necessity of blogging (many great new posts to come).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/melbournemumma.com\/2011\/08\/26\/the-weekend-project\/\">MelbourneMumma<\/a> &#8211; another mom with lots of inspiring ideas and images.<\/li>\n<li>Other people who do similar types of art, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/artandtreasure.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/05\/botanica-an-altered-book\/\">artandtreasure<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/agirlandherbrush.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/30\/serendipity\/\">serendipity<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/knitthehellout.com\/2011\/08\/12\/morning-vision\/\">knit the hell out<\/a> (love that &#8220;vision&#8221; sweater thing! I hope I find time to knit this year), <a href=\"http:\/\/phrogmom.wordpress.com\/\">phrogmom<\/a>, and more!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What I&#8217;m Looking Forward to Next Month:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_469\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 200px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/mg_6419-e1_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-469 size-medium\" title=\"family\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/mg_6419-e1_1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/mg_6419-e1_1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.nancyduckhildebrand.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/mg_6419-e1_1.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">My dear little almost 4-yr-old, so proud to be dressed like mommy (and my 2-yr-old oblivious of the point of the photo).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The beginning of autumn, my favourite season &#8211; the crisp air, the morning mist that crouches over the riverbank where I work, apples from the orchard, curry, stuffed pumpkins, preschool (for my daughter), flannel sheets, fall leaves, purple asters. For me, autumn is like New Year&#8217;s Eve for some &#8211; I am often struck by a sense of renewal and artistic inspiration.<\/li>\n<li>My beautiful daughter&#8217;s fourth birthday next week. Watching her grow and learn to print, read, be kind. It is so much fun being a mom.<\/li>\n<li>A welcome return of Saturday brunches with friends&#8230;look forward to reconnecting with lots of you!<\/li>\n<li>A short trip to Victoria later in the month.<\/li>\n<li>Lots of fall events at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pc.gc.ca\/eng\/lhn-nhs\/bc\/langley\/index.aspx\">work<\/a>, which I am planning and designing ads, posters and promotional material for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following suit, linked to Megan at SortaCrunchy, I will sum up my August.
